It is very difficult to obtain any information about other prisoners in the camp.
It is believed that some officers were taken from the camp in February and some more again in April. CHAN has no idea where they went.
There are no regular Indian troops in SHAM SHUI PO at all now. Many of them are used as armed guards and paid by the Japanese. They treat Ps.0.W. very badly whenever they come in contact with them.
Quite a number of Portuguese Volunteers who escaped before internment are now in MACAO and are almost penniless. They are eager to get out to Free China and continue their service with the forces anywhere.
Working parties frequently go out from the camp but it is hard to find out where they go. 4th Battery H.K.V.D.C. has supplied one to KAM TIN (141782, Reference Map: HONG KONG & NEW TERRITORIES, 1/20,000) and the Royal Scots worked on STONECUTTERS ISLAND for 4 days. 3rd Battery H.K.V.D.C. personnel were working in CHEUNG SHA WAN Road when CHAN escaped.
Working parties are not paid but they get an extra bath.
All other ranks of the rank of sergeant and lower are compelled to work.
Early one morning in February, Captain COLE O.C. 3rd Battery, H.K.V.D.C., came and ordered the Battery to fall in in single line. On the arrival of a Japanese Officer the following were pointed out: Sgt. David Leonard, L/Bdr.Poon, Gunners T.C. Ho, Lock and Chan, together with two others whose names CHAN cannot remember. They were put on to a lorry and taken to AP LI CHAU (1849 Reference Map: HONG KONG & NEW TERRITORIES, 1/20,000). They were given a good meal and good cigarettes and then taken to their guns at their war
stations.
